Yoga-na Feel Better

If you were to walk into an office building to find all the suit-clad employees dispersed around the desks in random yoga poses, shoes off and ties loosened, breathing slowly with eyes closed, you’d think you’d gone insane.

But if such a thing were to happen, odds are the opposite would occur. Why? The stress and depression levels of your whole office would drop, so the sanity levels would rise. Doesn’t that sound nice?

“Depression is one of the most common mental illnesses in the world. It is estimated that there are 350 million people worldwide who have some form of depression.” (Bridges) I bet you can think of several depressed people of your own acquaintance. You may even be one of them. Did you know that practicing yoga will help you to manage it?

On the other side of the coin, I’ll bet you know several people who suffer from anxiety. Guess what? Yoga helps with that, too.

Yoga improves flexibility, can loosen muscles which diminishes aches and pains, generates balanced energy, reduces breathing and heart rates, lowers blood pressure and cortisol levels, increases blood flow, and reduces stress and anxiety due to calmness.

Studies show that even ten minutes of daily yoga are beneficial to: calm people, depressed people, and anxious people. That means everyone! It’s especially helpful for those in the caregiver professions, or those caring for loved ones.

In fact, yoga is so powerful that “All practitioners teaching stress management should teach yoga as one of the approaches to stress reduction.” (Sharma)

How do you start your first 10 minutes of yoga? If you’re nervous about it, try searching “10 minute beginner yoga” into Google or Youtube, and follow along. You don’t need to use a yoga mat your first time, a towel or carpet will work until you can invest in one. Or you could find and commit to a yoga class near you. You’ll thank me (and mostly yourself) in a week.

But you needn’t take only my word for it! RB Kelly, Body Language Boss and public speaker said the following about how yoga helped her professional career: “When Covid hit, I was stuck inside. All my speaking gigs were cancelled, and I wasn’t allowed to leave the house at all since I was living in Korea at the time. All of my coping mechanisms were gone in an instant and my depression hit me with full force. I only made it through because I had only one daily goal: follow 1 yoga video before the day ends. I got my depression under control, was able to start new hobbies after a while, and now I can touch my toes!”

An account from a work-from-home receptionist of 8 years said the following about practicing yoga: “I never knew how tense collection calls made me until I signed up for a month of yoga classes. I had low expectations, but soon began to love going to those classes! It was good exercise and I learned how to realize when I was tense, especially when working, and how to relax myself before I got headaches. I love yoga now; even short little workouts help.”
