“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, they should do as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ.” - 1 Peter 4:10-11 NIV
The Bible mentions spiritual gifts several times throughout the New Testament. But what exactly are spiritual gifts? And do you have one as well?
What are Spiritual Gifts?
Spiritual gifts are given to us through the Holy Spirit to help further the work of Christ on earth. Not all His followers are given the same gifts, but each gift is unique and personal to who the person is.
We don’t have to strive to earn a spiritual gift. It’s through God’s free offering of grace that He blesses us with our individual gifts. As we grow closer to God, we’ll better understand how to use our spiritual gifts.
We use our spiritual gifts to build up the body of Christ. This may include missionary trips to another country or preaching in a church. It also might be leading a Bible study or encouraging faith in your community. Each of us has our own unique spiritual gift.
Spiritual gifts are described in several passages in the Bible, including Romans 12:3-8, 1 Corinthians 12:1-10, Ephesians 4:11-12, and 1 Peter 4:10-11.
Do I Have a Spiritual Gift?
Every believer has a spiritual gift. These are not skills or natural talents. Once we accept Christ’s salvation, God blesses us with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit helps us live out our spiritual gifts to glorify God.
It’s important to remember that our spiritual gifts are given to us to help us grow deeper in our relationship with God. We’re called to use these gifts to expand His kingdom on earth.
Types of Spiritual Gifts
There are many different kinds of spiritual gifts listed in the Bible. These gifts help us direct people to God and are used for the good of His people.
Some examples of spiritual gifts are:
• Administration
• Apostleship
• Discernment
• Evangelism
• Faith
• Giving
• Healing
• Knowledge
• Leadership
• Mercy
• Prophecy
• Service
• Teaching
• Tongues
Don’t worry if you don’t understand what your spiritual gift is. It can be challenging to decipher what yours is at first. Over time, and in growing in your relationship with Christ, you’ll begin to discover which spiritual gift best relates to your life.
Worshiping With Your Spiritual Gifts
“But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be.” - 1 Corinthians 12:18 NIV
The Bible mentions several times that believers are called to be the body of Christ. As followers of Christ, we each have an important role to play. One person may have one specific gift, while you have another that is uniquely and personally yours.
We’re all created on purpose with a purpose. With our spiritual gifts, we’re called to glorify God and expand His kingdom on earth.
