I have often found it overwhelming to try and pray for the needs of every person in my life during prayer time. I believe it’s important to spend time in prayer, but I also don’t want to feel like I need to rush through every person on my list, just so I can “get them in.” So, several years ago, I decided to make a change that has been immensely helpful to keep me on track with my prayer list without making me feel overwhelmed by it. The trick I discovered was to make a daily prayer schedule and plan to pray for specific people on specific days. If there is an immediate need, of course, it can (and should) be prayed about, no matter which day I am on. But the general rule is to keep it to a simple schedule such as this:
SUNDAY – Focus on thanksgivings. Make a point not to ask for anything unless it’s an immediate need. Just spend time thanking God for all He has done for you; and be specific about it.
MONDAY – Focus on church family and the specific requests that have been mentioned in church or through the church prayer chain.
TUESDAY – Focus on my spouse and myself, including our health, marriage relationship, friendships, parenting skills, our jobs, important decisions, etc.
WEDNESDAY – Focus on our children; their health, safety, behavior, attitudes, goals, friendships, spiritual growth, decisions, etc.
THURSDAY – Focus on our parents and grandparents, regarding their health, safety, marriage, jobs, decisions, etc.
FRIDAY – Focus on the needs of our extended family - our siblings & their families, cousins, aunts, uncles, and so on.
SATURDAY – Focus on specific friends & their families.
I encourage you to try out this type of schedule for a week or two and see how it goes for you. Adjust it as needed to make it your own.
You can type out your schedule as shown above, write it out in a prayer journal or spiral notebook, or use 3 x 5 cards to write a day of the week at the top of each card and then add specific requests to them as the requests come.
When you are done, set your prayer schedule in a place where you will see it each day, then be diligent about setting aside some time to share your thoughts with the Lord. He desires to hear from us, and He’s always there to listen, no matter what time of day it is.
